Director Focus: RAINER WERNER FASSBINDER II

The best thing I can think of would be to create a union between something as beautiful and powerful and wonderful as Hollywood films and a criticism of the status quo. That's my dream, to make such a German film.

I'm going in again.

Last time around I went for the heavy hitters. Twenty of them.

That still takes a while to sink in. Fassbinder. One man. Thirteen years. And twenty films still barely gets you halfway into his catalogue.

So, I'm going to finish what I've started. This time around the focus is predominantly on two areas: his early films (9 of the films here are from the first two years of output) and the television work that I made a point of not including last time around. Some of these television films are simply filmed stage shows (a stream which culminates in his documentary Theatre in Trance), others are well respected films that I couldn't get my hands on last time around, namely Martha and Fear of Fear (both headlined by Margit Carstensen).

Suffice to say, this probably won't be the heady mix of emotional intellectualism in which I bathed myself three years ago. I may have skimmed the cream off the top back then but I'm still hopeful for a breakout film or two. I'm also intrigued to see Fassbinder's footing-finding period and how fluidly he worked through his early influences.

And I just want to collect the set.
