MQFF NOTES: Everlasting Love (2014, Dir. Marçal Forès)

It may only clock in at an hour and ten minutes but festival fatigue got the better of me and I dozed through a fair chunk of Everlasting Love. Actually, it is probably more accurate to say I drifted in and out.

I checked with a mate on my way out. "So, let me get this straight," I said, "The teacher guy went to a beat, picked up a student, sexed him, dissed him, then got eaten?"

"Yep, that's about the run of it."

Kudos to director and co-writer Marçal Forés for trying something a little different on the queer front. From what I saw amongst the choppy narrative, there wasn't quite enough to propel the film along, and the casting didn't lift the experience as well as it could have (Joan Bentalle and Aimar Vega don't bring the personality to cut through the film's dense mood). The end reveal (which I was awake for) is only really a surprise in its punkish treatment, but it left an imprint.

One to admire more than enjoy.

Everlasting Love screened as part of the Melbourne Queer Film Festival 2016.
