MQFF NOTES: You're Killing Me (2015, Dir. Jim Hansen)

Snappy youtube comedy gets a feature makeover in You're Killing Me. Jeffery Self knows he's onto a good thing. He's got a shtick and he knows that quick cut comedy is where it's at nowadays. With the help of director and co-writer, Jim Hansen, he's make an entertaining leap into long format, without losing any of the energy.

The two successfully skewer the self-centredness of 15-minute gay-fame with a bloodthirsty horror comedy, with George (Self), one half of an internet comedy duo, falling for Joe (Matthew McKelligon), an excruciatingly hot sociopath who murders his way through the friendship group. Egocentrism and lust help George turn a blind eye to the rather graphic violence going on around him, with increasingly bloody, increasingly hilarious consequences.

There's are some big personalities here (Chlöe's Drew Droge for one) and they're all en pointe. The spring in everyone's step means You're Killing Me's one note comedy stretches with surprising elasticity. The laughs land regularly and the balance of stomach churn to belly laugh is perfectly calibrated from start to finish.

Enjoyable throw-away comedy that is almost good enough to keep.
